Cortex Complex: 2nd Night
Chapter 3: Missing

By the time Psychology class had started the students of the Academy of Evil had already forgotten about the morning’s event. All of them except for one: Nina. The psychology teacher Ms. Claudia Patterson was pacing from side to side in front of the chalkboard at the front of the classroom giving a lecture:

“To control the body, you must control the mind. No matter how powerful your henchmen are they will be useless to you if they don’t follow orders.”

Most of the students were taking notes as Ms. Patterson kept on talking. Lockbolt however was chewing on his pencil while staring off into space, not a single word written on his paper. Nina, who was sitting to his right, was only partially jotting down what the teacher was saying. She was too distracted by her own thoughts and theories about what could be going on behind the scenes at the Academy to pay much attention. A rather sharp poke on the head from Lockbolt brought her painfully back to reality.

“Didn’t you hear the bell?” He said. “It’s lunch time.”

Lunch was more eventful that usual when Henry and P.J. started a food fight in the cafeteria. Lockbolt didn’t have any food of his own to throw so he barrowed some of Nina’s, unfortunately for her who was still eating. Lockbolt had nailed Andelina right in the face with a half eaten burger which sparked an all out melee resulting in tables and desks being thrown. By the time lunch was over just about every teacher in school could not restore order. It took the death threats of Madame Amberley herself to finally get the students out of the cafeteria and off to the next class.

Ms. Neko’s classroom was uneventful despite the excitement just minutes ago in the cafeteria since most students did not want to start trouble with a cat-like teacher who could growl like a lion. Being the only anthro teacher had its advantages. By the time Ben Thorn’s Biology class started kids were chatting happily about what they were going to do over the weekend. Being Friday and the day half over already the students were eager for the two day break from school classes.

“So, what are you doing this weekend, Nina?” Slash asked from the desk right behind hers.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” She asked without turning around.

“Um, well… I... was wondering….” Slash was nervous his hands were shaking. “If you aren’t doing anything this weekend…. Maybe we…”

“You sure are stuttering a lot. And you’re starting to sweat too.” Lockbolt interrupted from the desk right behind Slash’s, in a tone as innocent and observant as ever.

Slash grumbled to himself quietly. Nina rolled her eyes and just ignored them.

The last two classes of the day were spent with Professor N. Igma. Even though Nina and her classmates had multiple subjects taught by other teachers, Igma was their primary teacher, so they spent twice as long in his class than any other. The first part of Igma’s class was his specialty subject of Ancient Magic. (Much like art or music, magic was a talent based ability, so no one was expected to excel at it. Only a rare few could master it at all) The second half of his class was Home Room, which dealt with the basic education subjects like math and literature.

Half way thru the first part of Igma’s class, the ancient magic portion, Andelina, who was still a little hyper from the food fight earlier in the cafeteria jumped up and yelled: “Chair fight!” and then picked up a chair to throw. Unfortunately for Renton, who was sitting at the desk next to hers, was still sitting in the chair she had decided to throw.

Andelina was often attentive and obedient in Ancient Magic class since it was her favorite subject, but she had occasional outbursts of hyperactivity. This always resulted in furniture being destroyed or one of her classmates getting hurt, usually with them ending up in the infirmary.

“AAAHHHHHH!!!” *SMASH* Andelina had sent Renton flying into the chalkboard up at the front of the classroom. Renton got up and stumbled back to his desk. Igma had ducked down just in time and was hiding behind his own desk. He had built up some good reflexes over time from dealing with students who were deliberately taught to be evil and disobedient.

Igma’s class was by far the most eventful one in the whole Academy. It was practically a daily occurrence in which something violent or crazy happened. The other teachers at the Academy were better at keeping their students in line. But for Igma he was still a rookie of a teacher and easy for his students to prey on with their hooligan antics.

Igma cautiously crept out from behind his desk as if expecting more objects to come flying across the room at him. “Now, as I was saying…” Igma said, as he picked up a piece of chalk and began writing on the board again. He had been giving a lecture about the magical properties of ancient voodoo amulets before the interruption.

Time trudged on and the basic education half of class had started. It was literature time and Nina was bored out of her mind. Her eyes began to wander around the room. A few of her classmates had fallen asleep. When her eyes strayed back to Igma who was busy writing on the chalkboard with his back turned she noticed it: his skeletal hand was missing.

"Psst, hey Locky.” Nina whispered to Lockbolt, who was sitting at the desk to her right. “Look at Igma, his hand is missing!”

Lockbolt had destroyed his pencil earlier from chewing on it too much so he was now chewing on his pen. “No, it’s there. See, he’s writing on the chalkboard.” He replied.

“No, the other one! The bone one. It’s not there. See?” Nina pointed at Igma’s left arm.

“Hey, yeah. It’s gone.” Lockbolt noticed, while still chewing on his pen.

“He still had it when class first started. Now it isn’t there anymore. What do you think happened?” Nina asked.

“As I recall,” Lockbolt answered, finally taking his pen out of his mouth. “He can detach his skeletal hand, and can still control it separately. I remember him doing that back when I was enslaved by him. It seemed a like a really useful ability.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about that before?” Nina asked.

“You never asked.” Lockbolt replied in an innocent tone. He put his pen back in his mouth and began resuming his chewing.

Nina snapped him an annoyed look. Not only because her companion hadn’t told her everything he had known about their “enemy” but also because his pen chewing was starting to grate on her nerves. “Something weird is going on around here….” She thought to herself.

"Professor Igma!” Jessica interrupted from the back of the classroom. “The bottomless pit is getting bigger!”

Igma stopped writing on the chalkboard. “You all know the drill. Everyone move your desks over by a foot and if there’s still a classroom on Monday we’ll have a test on why you kids have no future.” Igma said, as he rammed his shoulder into his own desk and began to shove it to the left.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's just another normal school day for the kids at the Academy of Evil. ^_^

At the Academy each set of students rotate thru the different classes during the day and have Home Room last. Each of the teachers have their own class of students they home room for. For Igma his is Nina's class. ^_^
